“Business is keeping us going. I’m able to get to the shop and roast every day, as well as come up with new blends and different ways to roast coffee. We’ve also spent the last month fixing up our patio for the summer. However, just like everyone else, I’ve reached the end of Netflix, had a few more drinks than normal, and I’ve had been spending some good quality time with my wife and dog. My wife and I got married a week before we opened, so spending more time together has been really nice.

In the beginning of the shutdown I was grilling, A LOT. Most meals big or small, I was our there and finding new recipes online … eventually it got old, but it was still fun and now I have a bigger “catalogue” of what’s for dinner. I also brought my drum kit into the cafe and have been finally able to play as loud and as often as I want. That’s something I may miss when we return to normal.

At Hexe, we’ve decided to do Sunday pickups and pre-order since the third week of the shutdown (Lo Rez Edit: We are Week 11 wtf). Obviously not the same as open 7 days a week, but it’s nice to see all of our regulars in person and great to hear them say they miss us and want to support us! Fortunately for the coffee business, I don’t think people will quit drinking this stuff. Whether it’s mine or someone else’s, we and it ain’t goin anywhere.

Obviously there’s the fear of uncertainty of the future but there’s sort of always is, especially when starting a new business. Still being able to come to Hexe, roast some coffee, crack open a Lo Rez ( ;) ) and blast my Stoner rock has kept me sane. That & my dog. She’s way to f*cking cute.

On the positive side, I’m looking forward to Chicago summer. Motorcycles and patio season, baby!

But realistically, we’re in a bad way right now. I won’t get political, but I’m hopeful for a change in America. COVID seems like a distant past this week.”
